MASON HILL album Against The Wall

MASON HILL est un jeune groupe écossais originaire de Glasgow, et depuis 2013, il arpente les scènes du Royaume-Unis, libérant une musique dynamique et communicative.  En 2015, le quintet sort un premier EP éponyme qui laisse transparaître ses influences Classic Rock des années 70 et 80. Une première trame plutôt prometteuse qui donne envie d’attendre la suite. Mais il faudra alors patienter 6 longues années pour qu’un premier album studio voit le jour.

En effet, le groupe a du surmonter pas mal d’obstacles, au fil du temps, rebondir avec la crise du Covid et finalement s’en sortir haut la main. Le 5 mars 2021, ce premier album, Against The Wall , travaillé et peaufiné à souhait est enfin dans les bacs via 7Hz Recordings (ADA/ Warner).

 Du Classic Rock de ses débuts, MASON HILL a gardé la structure mais en évoluant vers un Rock alternatif et mélodique plus contemporain et plus commercial. Les amateurs du genre vont se régaler. Against The Wall ondule entre belles ballades accrocheuses et doucereuses au chant limpide et harmonieux et compositions Rock plus dynamiques .

L’album s’ouvre sur Reborn, un agréable prologue qui annonce la première couleur de cette palette de tonalités bigarrées de Rock classique et moderne. La voix de Scott Taylor a sensiblement évoluée et s’est affirmée. Il y a une vraie profondeur dans son chant qui dégage toute la passion et la conviction qui l’anime.

Une façon de faire ressentir avec beaucoup de charme et d’ardeur le thème de ses chansons axé sur les problèmes existentiels du quotidien. Une sorte de bataille pour essayer d’être toujours meilleur et voir les bons cotés de la vie. Les titres des morceaux parlent d’eux mêmes et il en ressort la certitude qu’il faut souvent se remettre en question  pour avancer et progresser.

« Wake up, Hold on, Stand up »..

Et cette envie de positivité se ressent immédiatement avec « No Regret » un morceau centré sur la basse. Pas de regret pour le passé, car il faut aller de l’avant. C’est une chanson entraînante et convaincante tout comme le message qu’elle veut faire passer. Il y a vraiment une volonté de progresser et le rythme énergique s’accentue avec Against The Wall. « Ouvrez les yeux , ne restez pas au pied du mur, libérez vous »..  De bons riffs efficaces et un bel enthousiasme communicatif, dans cette course contre le diable.

Broken Son prend une tournure plus pop rock mais le solo de guitare sauve un peu le coté trop sirupeux de cette chanson. Et D.N.A redonne un bon coup d’énergie Rock, mais avec toujours une touche pop affirmée. Le tempo se veut plus massif avec une guitare groovy et un chant plus grave. Surement un Hit en puissance.

Après ce sursaut d’émulation, l’ambiance se calme avec Who We Are, une ballade qui interpelle sur le chemin à prendre pour s’en sortir et montrer qui nous sommes. En quelque sorte, s’endurcir pour s’en sortir et trouver son chemin.  Find My Way s’ouvre alors retentissant et vrombissant avec un solo de guitare efficace et une voix plus rugueuse.

Hold On surenchérit cet appel à l’éveil. L’ombre d’Alter Bridge plane sur cette chanson au groove très attractif tout comme sur Out Of Reach. Le solo est superbe et tout aussi captivant que le chant très poignant.

Nouveau souffle pop rock avec le dynamique We Pray avant l’émotionnelle ballade Where I Belong, au magnifique solo de guitare très Floydien.

Tout comme il a commencé, Against The Wall se referme en douceur sur Reborn.

Toute chose a un commencement et ce premier album confirme les promesses déjà faites avec l’EP éponyme. MASON HILL a pris de l’assurance et trace sa route même si il ne se hasarde pas trop sur des sentiers inconnus. Mais cette renaissance est plutôt réussie et les écossais ont su marier judicieusement leurs influences.  Le résultat est un Modern Classic Rock entraînant et qualitatif qui mérite vraiment un bel accueil .

MASON HILL is a young Scottish band from Glasgow, and since 2013 they’ve been roaming the stages of the UK, releasing dynamic and communicative music. In 2015, the quintet released a first self titled EP which reveals its Classic Rock influences from the 70s and 80s. A rather promising first frame which makes you want to wait for the rest. But it will then be necessary to wait 6 long years for a first studio album to emerge.

Indeed, the group had to overcome a lot of obstacles, over time, bounce back from the Covid crisis and finally come out with flying colors. On March 5, 2021, this first album, Against The Wall, worked and refined to perfection is finally in the vats via 7Hz Recordings (ADA / Warner).

From the Classic Rock of its beginnings, MASON HILL has kept the structure but evolving towards an alternative and melodic rock that is more contemporary and more commercial. Fans of the genre will be in for a treat. Against The Wall undulates between beautiful catchy and sweet ballads with limpid and harmonious vocals and more dynamic Rock compositions.

The album opens with Reborn, a pleasant prologue which announces the first color of this palette of variegated tones of classic and modern Rock. Scott Taylor’s voice has significantly evolved and asserted itself. There is a real depth in his singing which gives off all the passion and conviction that animates him.

A way of making felt with a lot of charm and ardor the theme of his songs centered on the existential problems of everyday life. A kind of battle to be always better and to see the bright side of life. The titles of the songs speak for themselves and it emerges the certainty that it is often necessary to question oneself in order to move forward and progress.

« Wake up, Hold on, Stand up » ..

And this desire for positivity is felt immediately with « No Regret » a song centered on the bass. No regrets for the past, because we have to move forward. A catchy and convincing song just like the message it wants to convey. There is a real desire to progress and the energetic rhythm increases with « Against The Wall« . « Open your eyes, don’t stay against the wall, free yourself » .. Good effective riffs and a beautiful communicative enthusiasm, in this race against the devil.

« Broken Son » takes a more pop rock turn but the guitar solo saves a little the syrupy side of this song. And « D.N.A » gives back a good shot of Rock energy, but always with an assumed pop touch. The tempo is more massive with a groovy guitar and a more serious vocals. Surely a hit in power!

After this burst of emulation, the atmosphere calms down with « Who We Are« , a ballad that calls out on the path to take to get out of it and show who we are. In a way, harden yourself to get out and find your way. Then, « Find My Way » opens, resounding and whirring with an effective guitar solo and a rougher voice.

« Hold On » outbid this wake-up call. The shadow of Alter Bridge hangs over this very attractive groove song just like on « Out Of Reach« . The solo is superb and just as captivating as the very poignant vocals.

New pop rock breath with the dynamic « We Pray » before the emotional ballad « Where I Belong« , with a magnificent Pin Floyd vibe in the guitar solo.

Just as it started, Against The Wall closes smoothly on Reborn.

Everything has a beginning and this first album confirms the promises already made with the self titled EP. MASON HILL has gained confidence and is charting his course even if he does not venture too much on unfamiliar paths. But this reborn is successful and the Scots have been able to combine their influences judiciously. The result is a lively and qualitative Modern Classic Rock which really deserves a warm welcome.
