RESIDENT HUMAN de WHEEL
Basé à Helsinki, WHEEL se compose de James Lascelles (chant / guitare), de Santeri Saksala (batterie), d’Aki ‘Conan’ Virta (basse) et de Jussi Turunen (guitare solo). Après deux EP, The Path en 2017 et The Divide en 2018, le quatuor anglo-finlandais sort un remarquable premier album studio en février 2019.
Avec Moving Backwards, WHEEL affirme son identité sonore et ses compositions se voient souvent comparées aux chef-d’oeuvres Tooliens. Le quatuor fusionne habilement prog rock, prog metal, nu metal associés à des influences grunge.
Ce nouvel album, RESIDENT HUMAN, plus démonstratif et puissant que jamais, propulse le groupe au sommet de son art…
Tout au long des 7 titres, le quatuor déploie une grande rigueur avec une belle assurance. L’alchimie entre les musiciens opère inévitablement et ils poussent toujours plus loin ce groove énorme qui règne dans chacun des morceaux.
Coté thématique, plusieurs des chansons sont inspirées de ‘Hyperion Cantos’ de Dan Simmons. Un opéra de l’espace (sous-genre de la science-fiction) caractérisé par des histoires épiques ou dramatiques avec des personnages complexes. Ce fil conducteur relie chaque titre entre eux et Resident Human est donc ce personnage, dans toute sa splendeur et toute son abjection, auteur de sa propre destruction.
Partons tout d’abord en voyage astral avec Dissipating. Une chanson grandiose et d’une beauté émotionnelle incroyable. La magnifique voix de James Lascelles s’articule autour d’un noyau instrumental obsédant. La rythmique est à l’unisson avec une basse très dense, une pulsation de batterie intense et un riff totalement fédérateur. Du rock Progressif époustouflant chargé d’émotions et de lignes atmosphériques envoûtantes.
Le tempo s’accélère avec Movement, dont le chant éloquent appelle à l’urgence de l’action. Un morceau de prog metal enflammé chargé de colère dont l’effervescence rythmique frappe de plein fouet. « It’s time to mobilize » !
Ascend, continue dans la même veine très dynamique et Toolienne. A la fois complexe et accessible, ce morceau est vertigineux dans sa technicité et son groove irrésistible. Une véritable machine rythmique en parfaite osmose avec un chant ensorceleur. Frisson garanti !
Après une brève distorsion, s’ouvre alors une intro clin d’oeil à l’illustre Peter Gabriel. Quelques notes fugaces qui plongent dans la magie d’Hyperion et de son tempo éthéré. Un saut dans le prog rock des 70’s où s’entremêlent des sonorités plus actuelles avec des variations de tempos admirables. Une aventure au delà des frontières du temps et où les hommes quelles que soient leurs divisions, prennent tous le même chemin vers le royaume des morts.
L’escapade cosmique prend alors toute sa dimension avec Fugue. Une fuite en avant, histoire de se voiler la face et ne pas voir la réalité galopante qui, infailliblement, rattrape les hommes. L’instrumentation est somptueuse et dense. Elle cède juste la place nécessaire à une courte mais exquise ligne de chant.
S’ouvre alors sous un grondement, la chanson titre Resident Human. L’énergie instrumentale se concentre une fois de plus autour de son noyau basse/batterie hyper groove, où se greffe une guitare très mélodique et enivrante. Ce morceau architectural est d’une intensité redoutable. Il évoque à juste titre l’homme faisant face à la pression, au stress et à l’anxiété de la vie moderne. Une exhortation à trouver la parade pour surmonter les problèmes existentiels.
Dix minutes et 32 secondes qui passent vite, trop vite, et c’est sur un air de piano mélancolique qu’Old Earth clôt ce fantastique voyage que l’on aurait voulu prolonger à l’infini.

RESIDENT HUMAN by WHEEL
Based in Helsinki, WHEEL consists of James Lascelles (vocals / guitar), Santeri Saksala (drums), Aki ‘Conan’ Virta (bass) and Jussi Turunen (lead guitar). After two EPs, The Path in 2017 and The Divide in 2018, the Anglo-Finnish quartet released a remarkable first studio album in February 2019.
With Moving Backwards, WHEEL asserts its sound identity and its compositions are often compared to Toolian masterpieces. The quartet skillfully merges prog rock, prog metal, nu metal combined with grunge influences.
This new album, RESIDENT HUMAN, more demonstrative and powerful than ever, propels the group to the top of its game …
Throughout the 7 titles, the quartet deploys great rigor with great confidence. The alchemy between the musicians inevitably operates and they always push further this enormous groove which reigns in each of the pieces.
Thematically, several of the songs are inspired by ‘Hyperion Cantos’ by Dan Simmons. A space opera (science fiction subgenre) characterized by epic or dramatic stories with complex characters. This common thread connects each title between them and Resident Human is therefore this character, in all his splendor and all his abjection, author of his own destruction.
First, let’s go on an astral journey with Dissipating. A grandiose song of incredible emotional beauty. James Lascelles’ magnificent voice revolves around a haunting instrumental core. The rhythm is in unison with a very dense bass, an intense drum beat and a totally unifying riff. Breathtaking Progressive rock loaded with emotions and bewitching atmospheric lines.
The tempo accelerates with Movement, whose eloquent song calls for the urgency of action. A fiery prog metal track loaded with anger whose rhythmic effervescence strikes full force. « It’s time to mobilize »!
Ascend, continues in the same very dynamic and Toolian vein. Both complex and accessible, this piece is dizzying in its technicality and irresistible groove. A real rhythmic machine in perfect harmony with a bewitching song. Thrill guaranteed!
After a brief distortion, then opens an intro wink at the illustrious Peter Gabriel. Some fleeting notes that plunge into the magic of Hyperion and its ethereal tempo. A leap into 70’s prog rock where more modern sounds intermingle with admirable tempo variations. An adventure beyond the borders of time and where men, whatever their divisions, all take the same path towards the kingdom of the dead.
The cosmic getaway then takes on its full dimension with Fugue. A headlong rush, just to hide the face and not see the galloping reality which, infallibly, catches up with men. The instrumentation is sumptuous and dense. It just gives way to a short but exquisite vocal line.
Then opens with a rumble, the title song Resident Human. The instrumental energy is once again concentrated around its hyper groove bass / drums core, where a very melodic and intoxicating guitar is grafted. This architectural piece is of formidable intensity. It rightly refers to the man facing the pressure, stress and anxiety of modern life. An exhortation to find the parade to overcome existential problems.
Ten minutes and 32 seconds that pass quickly, too quickly, and it is with a melancholy piano tune that Old Earth ends this fantastic journey that we would have liked to extend to infinity.
With RESIDENT HUMAN, WHEEL makes a strong and vibrant imprint in Prog Metal music. It will undoubtedly become an essential group of the year 2021, and beyond. The wheel spins and the circle grows and Wheel is part of it.
