Gilby Clarke : The Gospel Truth

Gilby Clarke est de retour avec un cinquième album studio « The Gospel Truth », presque 20 ans après la sortie de son dernier album solo « Swag ». Entre temps, Gilby a dévoilé un Best Of en 2007. C’est dans son studio à Los Angeles, le Redrum Recording, qu’il a écrit et produit les morceaux qui composent « The Gospel Truth ».

A l’origine, Clarke officie au sein de Candy, son premier groupe. Il rejoint ensuite Kill For Thrills puis, fin 1991, sa carrière prend un tournant lorsqu’il remplace Izzy Stradlin dans Guns N’ Roses jusqu’en 1994. A la suite de cela, on a pu le voir aux côtés de Slash’s Snakepit, MC5 ou encore Nancy Sinatra et Heart.

Ici, le brillant guitariste est accompagné de Muddy Stardust (Burning Tree) à la basse, et Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty, Bob Seger) à la batterie. Matt Starr (Ace Frehley, Mr. Big) ainsi que Chad Stewart (Faster Pussycat, L.A.Guns) s’occupent des chœurs. Et cerise sur le gâteau avec la participation de Nikki Sixx (Mötley Crüe, Sixx:A.M.) et Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction) sur le titre « Tightwad ».

Le morceau éponyme « The Gospel Truth » allume la mèche de ce nouvel opus explosif et très attendu, qui déborde d’une belle énergie. On note la présence de cuivres et de chœurs féminins, à l’image du chant gospel. Cela donne de la puissance, mais aussi de la profondeur. « The Gospel Truth » répand  un groove très communicatif.

Avec le titre suivant, nommé « Wayfarer », on part en voyage dans une ambiance bluesy et poussiéreuse. Quelques notes d’orgue viennent exalter la chanson. Il en est de même sur « Violation », où règne une atmosphère de saloon enfumé, avec le retour du clavier qui accentue cela.

« Tightwad » est un morceau dynamique et catchy à souhait, avec un rythme cadencé. Le son de basse de Nikki Sixx se distingue nettement, tout comme la frappe efficace de Stephen Perkins derrière ses fûts.
La route se poursuit avec « Rock n’ Roll is Getting Louder ». Gilby y fait ronronner une Gibson SG qui donne immédiatement envie de se dandiner. On ne peut qu’approuver l’état d’esprit de cette chanson et le petit clin d’œil/jeu de mots avec Motorhead.

Des riffs de guitares saturés et accrocheurs, associés à un gros son de basse, se succèdent tout au long de l’album. Les chœurs chantés par Matt et Chad sont, eux aussi, omniprésents. Les influences rock sont parfaitement mélangées à celle du blues, notamment sur « Wise Old Time ».
L’ajout d’instruments comme le saxo ou l’orgue, et même des passages de chants amplifiés par une reverb (« The Ending », « Dangerous Sin »), permettent de varier joliment des mélodies aux riffs affûtés.

La cadence ralentit un peu avec « Rusted n’ Busted ». Une chanson avec un chant légèrement éthéré et des paroles répétitives dans le style des années 80. A l’inverse, « She Won’t Fight Fair » a un côté plus lourd, proche du metal. Et c’est sur cette note que s’achève l’album.

Voilà un nouvel opus rafraîchissant et dynamique, aux purs sonorités hard rock des années 70. Il reste tout de même classique dans son style, mais on apprécie évidemment son côté old school.
« The Gospel Truth » est dans la même veine que « Swag ». C’est un bon album qui plaira donc aux fans invétérés du talentueux guitariste qu’est Gilby Clarke, mais aussi aux nouveaux adeptes.

Ici, il n’y a pas de ballades sirupeuses, seulement du bon vieux rock n’roll qui coule à flot sur les 10 chansons. Une belle palette d’influences allant du rock, en passant par ce que l’on pourrait qualifier d’outlaw metal et du blues pour un résultat final enflammé.

Gilby Clarke is back with a fifth studio album « The Gospel Truth », almost 20 years after the release of his last solo album « Swag ». Meanwhile, Gilby unveiled a Best Of in 2007. He wrote and produced the songs that make up « The Gospel Truth » in his studio in Los Angeles, the Redrum Recording.

Originally, Clarke started with Candy, his first band. He then joined Kill For Thrills and at the end of 1991, his career took a major turning point when he replaced Izzy Stradlin in Guns N ‘Roses until 1994. Following that, we could see him alongside Slash’s Snakepit, MC5 or even Nancy Sinatra and Heart.

Here, the brilliant guitarist is accompanied by Muddy Stardust (Burning Tree) on bass, and Kenny Aronoff (John Fogerty, Bob Seger) on drums. The self titled track « The Gospel Truth » lights the fuse of this explosive and eagerly awaited new opus, which overflows with a beautiful energy. We note the presence of brass and female choirs, just like gospel singing. This gives power, but also depth to the song. « The Gospel Truth » spreads a very communicative groove.

With the next track, called « Wayfarer », we go on a journey in a bluesy and dusty atmosphere. Some organ notes come to exalt the song. It is the same on « Violation », where reigns a vibe of smoky saloon, with the return of the keyboard which accentuates that.

« Tightwad » is a song as dynamic and catchy as you could wish, with a sway rhythm. Nikki Sixx’s bass sound stands out clearly, as does Stephen Perkins’ efficient hitting behind his drums.
The road continues with « Rock n ‘Roll is Getting Louder ». Gilby strums a Gibson SG that immediately makes you want to dance. We can only approve of the mood of this song and the little wink / pun with Motorhead.

Saturated and catchy guitar riffs, associated with a big bass sound, follow one another throughout the album. The backing vocals sung by Matt and Chad are also omnipresent. All the rock influences are perfectly mixed with blues ones, in particular on « Wise Old Time ».
Also, the addition of instruments like the sax or the organ, and even some vocals amplified by a reverb (« The Ending », « Dangerous Sin »), allow to vary nicely melodies to sharp riffs.

The speed slows down a bit with « Rusted n ‘Busted ». A song with a slightly ethereal vocals and repetitive lyrics in the style of the 80s. On the contrary, « She Won’t Fight Fair » has a heavier side, close to metal. And it is on this note that the album ends.

It is a new bracing and dynamic opus, with pure hard rock tones of the 70s. It is still classic in its genre, but we obviously appreciate its old school vibe.
« The Gospel Truth » is in the same vein as « Swag« . It’s a good album which will therefore appeal to die-hard fans of the talented guitarist Gilby Clarke, but also to new followers.

Here, there are no syrupy ballads, only good old rock n’roll that flows freely on the 10 songs. A beautiful palette of influences ranging from rock, through a bit of what we could call outlaw metal, and some blues for an inflamed end result.
