Hollywood Vampires a commencé avec Alice Cooper, Joe Perry d’Aerosmith et l’acteur Johnny Depp, mais a évolué en un groupe complet avec une gamme « all-star » d’invités spéciaux tels que Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS, ex-NIRVANA),  Paul McCartney (ex-THE BEATLES),  Slash (ex-GUNS ‘N’ ROSES), Robby Krieger (ex-THE DOORS), Brian Johnson (AC/DC) et bien d’autres encore.

L’idée du nom du groupe ainsi que de l’album éponyme est né de la volonté de faire revivre un club privé (créé en 1972 et dont Alice Cooper est un membre fondateur) qui se trouvait au premier étage d’un bar nommé « Rainbow Bar & Grill » sur le Sunset Strip à Los Angeles et où se retrouvaient des personnalités comme John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon, Bernie Taupin, Jim Morrison et Mickey Dolenz entre autres.

Alice Cooper se souvient: «Pour faire partie du club, il fallait simplement offrir un verre à tous les membres. »

Cooper et Depp aurait décidé de réexaminer l’esprit de la camaraderie de cette époque et de faire un album de reprises rock avec des invités spéciaux. Avec le guitariste d’Aerosmith Joe Perry, le trio a demandé à un certain nombre d’amis musiciens (  Brian Johnson d’AC / DC , Sir Paul McCartney, Perry Farrell, Dave Grohl, Slash, Joe Walsh, Robbie Krieger, Zak Starkey et Kip Winger) de se joindre à eux

L’album comporte 14 titres dont une introduction parlée intituléé « The Last Vampire » réalisée par Sir Christopher Lee, et enregistrée juste peu de temps avant sa mort, onze reprises et trois nouvelles compositions.

Le premier single de l’album est un mélange de “School’s Out” de Alice Cooper avec Pink Floyd “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2. La chanson a été enregistrée avec Alice Cooper et Brian Johnson au chant, Slash, Joe Perry, Johnny Depp, Tommy Henriksen et Bruce Witkin à la guitare, Neil Smith à la batterie, Dennis Dunaway à la basse et Kip Winger et producteur Bob Ezrin pour les choeurs. Le disque comprend également des reprises des chansons de The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix et plus.
